Over the past two weeks one – Huge- thing has changed in my personal life and as a result the way I do my business. Inspiration
I was reading in an article last week – It was a story about a 120th-Anniversary Celebration in Korea. Near the end I read, “Only when we meet people face to face can we start being missionaries.” It was a mission focused presentation and it really challenged me. I thought I could serve people behind the security of my computer screen. But perhaps my calling as a producer is to do something greater. To serve a need in my community, and thereby improve society.
From that point onwards, I decidedly shifted my focus. I realised that I needed to help people in my local community, But I didn’t know where to start. I’ve been living in Kuala Lumpur for the past 9 months – Im relatively new right? I don’t know many people in the business world here. What should I do?
The Birth of A Podcast Idea
I was already talking with my team about creating a new podcast for the agency – One that would help us to find clients for our services. And it hit me – I’ll make a podcast for Malaysian business leaders. I can spotlight projects that are helping society and thereby spread the word of these innovative people and at the same time find clients in Malaysia who need podcasting services.
So I started planning out an idea for the show. In the process I created a “Show Bible” – Its a multipage document that controls the content of the podcast. My process for this was really simple – Record and Edit. First, I recorded myself talking about the plan in detail. I walk through it section by section. I do this because I’m really afraid of blank pages. It’s a way I can brainstorm and get something on the page. Once thats there I can assemble my ideas and write a few paragraphs for each section. For example, The first thing I wanted to do was clearly define the problem and the solution my podcast gives – Its called a frustration statement.
The Problem
This is the “Problem” that I came up with: ”Business leaders In Malaysia’s evolving and highly saturated market, constantly face the pressure to stand out with fresh, sustainable ideas. Many business owners in its main centres of commerce find themselves struggling with creative block or losing out to fierce competition. Innovative ideas are essential for success in such a densely populated market. And countless leaders are in need of sustainable, impactful business ideas that not only launch but resonate with their audience and stand the test of time.”
From here I developed out the rest of the frustration statement. To explain more about how the podcast is postured to help solve this problem. Once I did that and identified out tribe or audience – I created a name and XY Premise Pitch for the show. If you don’t know what this is, go back to my last Article about it here.
Show Writing and Research
Creating the following idea took me a few iterations to refine the idea. And it took some time to getto where it is currently at.
The Show: Eco Innovators Podcast – Sustainable Malaysian Businesses
XY Premise Pitch: This podcast is about Malaysian sustainable business leadership (X). Unlike other shows, the Eco Innovators Podcast, reveals how Malaysian entrepreneurs implement sustainable practices in their companies for you to apply directly to your own businesses—all in under 20 minutes. (Y)
I thought my idea was quite unique and I strongly resonate with this idea. Because I practiced it during COVID! I spent 4 years in Zimbabwe teaching sustainable methods of agriculture at an orphanage during 2020-2023. And I noticed that there is also an interest in it here in Malaysia. I did some research to find out if there is any sustainable business’ in Kuala Lumpur. And good news there is!
Then, I created a “Show cross” – A concept Ill have to write about some more in another article. And this help me decide how I wanted the show to “feel”. I chose two podcasts that I thought had original ideas that contributed to the feel of my new podcast. If you’r curious to know what they are – let me know in the comments. Researching for the “show cross” was a great opportunity to feel out what already existed in this space – I discovered there were no podcasts about sustainable businesses in Malaysia. Although there are plenty about business. Malaysians are all about business I’m learning!
Next Steps – Your Takeaway
Now is the fun part – I need to link up with these leaders. I need to take a deep dive in the sustainable ecosystem in Malaysia. And learn the stories of people in this vibrant world. Who knows who I’ll meet on this journey – But I’ll be sure to let you know! Do you have any business leaders in Malaysia you’d like to hear about?
Also – I’d love to hear what you think of todays topic. If you have any experience with creating “Show Bibles”, drop a comment. Do you think it adds value to a podcast production?
