Lessons From My Podcasting Journey: The XY Premise

Last week, I faced an interesting challenge: building a podcast concept from the ground up. Usually, I begin this process by creating a “Show Bible” for my clients, which includes refining the core idea for the podcast. But this time, I hit a roadblock. I wanted this show to feel unique, to stand out, but I wasn’t quite sure how to frame it.

@Jay Acunzo

After doing some research, I stumbled upon a brilliant resource from Jay Acunzo , who specialises in helping creatives shape their storytelling. One concept that really helped was his “XY Premise” formula. In simple terms, an XY premise boils down to:

“This is a project about X. Unlike other projects about X, only we Y.”

In this case, X is the main topic, while Y is the unique approach or perspective that sets your podcast apart.

I really recommend that you check out the examples he gave. It really helped me to think about how the podcast I was producing should stand out from the other podcasts in its genre. (One day I might just share it with you ;)).

Creating this XY premise for my client’s podcast helped me find a fresh, creative angle, and it gave the show a real sense of purpose and differentiation. If you’re looking to make your podcast stand out give the XY premise a shot. It will sharpen your concept – big time!

Hook your listener with a creative approach

Who know what creative challenges I’ll face this next week – But ill be sure to let you guys know! Do you have any challenges you’d like me to explore?

I’d love to hear what you think of todays topic. If you have any experience with XY Pitches, drop a comment. Do you think it’s a good exercise? Or just a waste of time?

On another note – If you’re ready to bring your story to life, I’d love to help. Reach out today for a free consultation, and let’s make something memorable together!
